You should always be in a comfortable, relaxed, and balanced athletic position… Try to complete all steps with the same distance between your feet.
There is a spectrum of possibilities to optimize your footwork, but always keep in mind that simplicity is effective.

The basic ground positions will help you learn and better understand the importance of grappling fundamentals.
Top position means that the fighter is over his opponent. And bottom position means that the fighter is under his opponent.
When you’re in top guard, you’ll be able to throw powerful strikes. Break the opponent’s guard, and get pass his legs. But if you’re in bottom guard, then you’ll have to look for sweeps, submissions ,or other tactics to get a better position.

Basic submissions are very important! Rear naked chokes and guillotines are the most used in MMA. You can use kimuras and arm bars to set them up, or to finish the fight as well. Don’t be afraid to apply them in various positions!
